Mini Review: The Expendables 2

It’s been a long 25 years since slam-bang action movies and its hulking stars were considered a commodity in Hollywood. But after a surprise 2010 hit, many of those stars including Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Let li, with many new faces like Randy Couture and Jason Statham, geared up once again for “The Expendables 2.”

Whereas Stallone, behind the camera and script, tried to give the original weight and depth not really needed in a movie of its caliber, here Simon West (Con Air) directed, and it was bigger, bloodier and better.

Here, the actors and director realized this was a genre that just needed to be big and bold with fun interplay among the cast. They all delivered with the added help of Arnold Schwarzanegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

In fairness, it was indeed a flawed movie. Some of the acting was just OK; the villain (Van Damme) had little weight, and the writing, though funny, had its bad moments. But it was just taken in so much stride by everyone that it was so much bloody fun.

The sets were big; the violence was plentiful and the effects were just as good as the ones done on Stallone and Van Damme.
